Inline Hockey Skates
What Are Roller Hockey Skates?
Roller hockey skates, which are also referred to as inline hockey skates and street hockey skates, form a fundamental part of roller hockey equipment for anyone keen to engage in street hockey. These skates closely resemble ice hockey skates, with the notable distinction being that they have wheels instead of blades and come with softer boots to deliver greater torque and flexibility.
The wheels on roller hockey skates typically range between 76mm and 80mm, striking a balance between being not too small and not too large. Medium-sized wheels provide superior stopping power, quicker acceleration, and better manoeuvrability compared to larger wheels. These wheels are often quite soft to maximise grip. However, for outdoor play, tougher wheels are the most suitable choice for use on concrete and asphalt surfaces.
What Size Roller Hockey Skates Should One Choose?
When purchasing a new pair of street hockey skates, be sure to consult our size guides and measure your feet beforehand. Sizes can differ across brands, and sizing hockey skates is distinct from shoe sizing. Roller hockey skates should fit snugly to ensure optimal power transfer and manoeuvrability. Skates that are too large could lead to foot discomfort and blisters.
How to Select Roller Hockey Skates
Think about your playing style and expertise. Recreational inline hockey skates cater to new players. They are cost-effective, making them a superb choice for beginners, young players, or those who simply wish to enjoy some fun games with friends. Entry-level street hockey skates typically have a flat setup, featuring four 80mm wheels for enhanced stability.
More experienced players who spend a minimum of one or two sessions per week in the rink will favour a more advanced skate. These skates generally have lighter, stiffer boots and adopt a wheel setup considered the industry standard—two 76mm wheels at the front and two 80mm wheels at the back—offering the best possible stopping power and control during sharp turns.
