Skateboard Griptape
Get a Grip and Show Your Style with Skateboard Griptape
Skateboard griptape is a self-adhesive sheet applied to the top of your skateboard. It resembles sandpaper and is textured to allow a secure stance and grip on the deck. Typically, skateboard griptapes are crafted from silicon carbide and are often available in the standard dimensions of 9 x 33 inches (23 cm x 84 cm). They can be purchased as a single sheet or in griptape rolls.
While black griptape is the most common choice, brightly coloured griptapes have gained popularity among skateboard enthusiasts. Some brands also offer griptapes that are transparent.
The Method for Removing Skateboard Griptape
Skateboard griptape will wear out over time, particularly with frequent use. The granular surface becomes smoother due to shoes and dirt, complicating trick execution.
To remove griptape, direct hot air over it using a hairdryer. This warming action softens the adhesive, making it easier to peel away with a utility knife. Any remaining adhesive can be delicately scraped away after being treated with nail varnish remover or an alcohol-based cleaner. Once the residue is cleared, you're ready to apply new griptape to your board.
Steps to Apply Griptape to a Skateboard
Applying skateboard griptape is a straightforward task requiring just a few tools. Begin by peeling away the paper from the sticky side of the griptape. Gently attach the sticky side to the deck, ensuring it is centered.
While affixing it, eliminate any air bubbles—many griptapes are perforated to simplify this step. After smoothing it onto the deck, make incisions at each corner of the griptape. Form guidelines by pressing the tape down against the deck's edges using a tool. You can then trim away the excess griptape with a sharp knife. Finally, create bolt holes with a pointed tool.
