What Purpose Do BMX Pegs Serve?
BMX bike pegs, or BMX stunt pegs, are vital for any freestyle cyclist aiming to experiment with new tricks. These pegs affix to the wheel axles, allowing up to four per bike. They are instrumental for executing a variety of tricks such as rail and ledge grinds as well as flatland stunts and are thus linked with freestyle BMX rather than racing or dirt jumping. When purchasing pegs, you have options in terms of materials, axle sizes, lengths, and diameters.
Although most BMX pegs are intended to fit the standard 10 mm front wheel axle and the 14 mm in the rear, it is always prudent to confirm compatibility before purchasing.
Should You Opt for Metal or Plastic Pegs?
Both metal and plastic pegs offer distinct benefits, which largely depend on intended usage. Metal pegs are typically constructed from steel or aluminium. Steel pegs boast durability and can endure significant wear, making them ideal for street BMX. Aluminium pegs provide an excellent compromise between strength and weight.
Conversely, plastic BMX pegs are more frequently utilised by park riders, as they glide smoothly on metal. In discussions about plastic pegs, we are often referring to peg sleeves, though some full plastic versions are available. These are lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to replace, but they do not match the durability of metal bike pegs.
Steps for Fitting and Removing BMX Pegs
The process of adding and removing pegs is generally straightforward. However, you will require a socket wrench, deep-well socket, and an Allen key. To begin, remove the washer and axle nut from the axle. Next, fit your peg onto the wheel axle and insert your axle nut through the peg. Use a socket wrench to secure both the peg and axle nut. To remove the pegs, reverse the process by turning the socket wrench anti-clockwise.
Moreover, it is beneficial to rotate your pegs periodically to enhance longevity.
