Avalanche Beacons & Gear
Essential Avalanche Backcountry Gear
Skiers and snowboarders venturing off-piste and into the backcountry are strongly encouraged to carry avalanche gear with them. The three key pieces of equipment include an avalanche beacon, avalanche probe, and avalanche shovel. Equally crucial is that the user has been trained in utilising the equipment in the event of an avalanche. All of these items can be stored in a ski backpack, which can be securely fastened to your body.
Using Avalanche Gear
The best way to learn how to utilise avalanche gear is by enrolling in a course conducted by a professional. This section provides a basic overview of the purpose of each piece of equipment.
Avalanche Beacon
Worn close to the body, avalanche beacons emit continuous radio signals that can be picked up by other beacons. In a snow rescue, beacons can be switched to "search mode" to assist in locating a person by receiving the necessary radio signal.
Avalanche Probe
A probe helps to determine the exact location and depth of a person beneath the snow. It functions similarly to a collapsible tent pole that is poked into the snow to pinpoint the skier's location.
Avalanche Shovel
The shovel's purpose is to excavate a skier. They usually come with an attachable handle, making them easy to pack in a backpack.
Airbag Packs
Airbag packs are another highly valuable piece of safety gear. Worn as a backpack, the airbag can be activated by pulling a handle, inflating rapidly using compressed air or a fan. The added air mass helps the skier remain atop the moving snow and avalanche debris, reducing the likelihood of burial.
